Joanie Landau

 

About

Artist and Jewelry Designer Joanie Landau was born and raised in New York. Early in her artistic career, she became fascinated with collagraphs, a rather obscure form of printmaking. Her 16th anniversary collection now includes Digital Collagraphs, where photographic elements merge with graphic design techniques. Like printmaking, the process possesses magical qualities.
 

Joanie Landau studied printmaking at the Silvermine School of Art, where she won both the “Rembrandt Award for Excellence in Graphic Art,” and the “First Prize Mixed Media” Awards. Her studio has been featured in East Coast Home Magazine and she has been a featured artist on Artsy Shark, Professional Artists Magazine, and Fairfield Magazine. In two year's time she has exhibited in over 20 shows across the country and most recently received the Award of Merit from the the Cooperstown Art Association. She is a proud member of the Loft Artists Association in Stamford, Ct., the Artists Collective of Westport and is an In House artist at White Birch Studio in Westport, CT. Artist Statement

Each of my pieces begins with original photography and usually multiple images are used to form a piece. I love working with saturated color as well as starkly contrasting black and whites and very often do a study of the same piece in all its beautiful transformations.
The digital art experience provides an outlet to be unceasingly creative, continually working and reworking pieces with the click of a mouse. Every new layer or filter creates endless possibilities, tapping into the unlocked potential that exists and providing the feeling that there are no barriers.

Nancy Landauer

Born, raised and educated in New York, Nancy Landauer has resided in Westport, Connecticut for the past 25 years. Having graduated from Parsons School of Design with a BFA in Illustration, Landauer enjoyed a career in magazine illustration as well as print and textile design. Now navigating the world of fine art, she works in mixed media collage and acrylic on canvas. She creates images that often have a retro look and always include text, either to convey a narrative or simply to add pattern and texture to the piece. Nancy has exhibited widely in New York and Connecticut, including exhibits at The White Room Gallery in Bridgehampton, N.Y., The Carriage Barn Arts Center in New Canaan, CT., The Gallery at Fairfield University in Stamford, and The Agora Gallery in New York City. She will have a solo exhibit in The Sheffer Gallery at the Westport Library in Westport, CT. in September 2019.

Studying with Charles (Chick) Peterson (AWS), William Gerhold, and Thomas Higgins, Greenwich CT artist Paul Larson graduated with degrees in Fine Art and Education from Marietta College in 1973. From 1975 until 1985 Paul worked as an artist, designer, and project director for the design firm L. E. Carpenter & Company in Milford, CT.

A current member of the Greenwich Art Society, the Loft Artist’s Association in Stamford, CT, and the Westport Artists’ Collective, he has participated in over 50 exhibitions during the past four decades. His paintings in oil, pastel, and acrylic have been recognized with many awards, and his artwork has been acquired by numerous collectors both in the U.S. and abroad.

His cubist influenced compositions are based upon the use of multifaceted geometric forms, the illusion of overlapping and intersecting planes, improbable perspectives, and subtle transitions of tonal passages that invariably tease the eye. The images most often depict the highly stylized solitary figure, usually set within a similarly stylized landscape; an exploration into alternate views of a world never seen before. Emily Hamilton Laux

ABOUT

Emily Hamilton Laux is a Connecticut-based visual artist whose primary medium is photography; she maintains a studio in the Firing Circuits artists’ studio lofts in Norwalk, CT.

 

Previously, Laux worked as a writer, editor, and photojournalist; she has also worked in the visual arts as a gallery director and publicist.

Born in Saigon, and raised in Cambodia, Paris and Washington, D.C., Laux

graduated from Tulane University, and earned her Masters degree in International Economic Policy from the American University School of International Service. As an adult, she spent ten years living and working in London and Hong Kong, and she has travelled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas. A lifelong photographer who purchased her first camera at 13, Laux believes her work is informed by her global cultural experience.

Her work has been exhibited at the Westport Historical Society, the Westport Arts Center, the Westport Downtown Merchant’s Association Annual Art Exhibition, and most recently the ARTWorks Gallery on the Green in Norwalk, CT. Laux’s work also has been featured exclusively by Fairfield County Bank and Simon Pearce.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My current work addresses contemporary and historical ideas about nature, ecology, biodiversity, and individual human relationships with the natural environment. As an environmentalist and visual artist, my intention is not to document changes in biodiversity and ecosystems, but rather provide an entry point to the rapidly-changing conversation on these issues through an artistic practice rooted in traditional landscape and portraiture.

Katya Lebrija was born in Mexico City, where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design from Universidad Anáhuac in 1995. After graduating, she worked as a freelance Graphic Designer until December of 1999, when she moved to the United States with her husband and two daughters.  Throughout her career she has used a different mediums, including watercolors and acrylics, and has also worked extensively with printmaking. Most recently, she has focused on creating mixed media pieces. Ms. Lebrija likes to work in series, which enables her to explore a single theme or idea in a variety of ways. Some of her paintings are currently (or have been recently) in display throughout her home state of Connecticut, as well as in New York City and her native Mexico City. She constantly participates in juried group shows and has had several solo exhibitions since 2013. Artist Statement

“Through vibrant colors and textures. I express myself without rules or hesitation. I approach the canvas with an idea in mind that becomes spontaneous and emotional through the process. My journey as an artist consists of endless experimentation, which teaches me new ways and is filled with emotions and surprises. I find that my paintings hold a conversation with each other and in the end, I encounter a story that connects with the viewer."

A graduate of Yale University, Julie Leff began painting professionally in 2001. Since then, her work has appeared in numerous solo and group shows in New York and Connecticut. Her artwork is held in many private collections in the US, Europe, and Asia. Her medium is oil paint on canvas and subjects are primarily florals, abstracts, and portraits. She also makes archival pigment prints of all her work, with prices ranging from $50 to $2000, depending on size. Artist Statement

I paint in oils on canvas using sable brushes. Whether I paint abstracts, portraits, or florals, I place my work at the end of an ongoing tradition of painting that extends back thousands of years. So I am a traditionalist. But, at the same time, my work is time-bound and personal, faithful to the authenticity of my own perceptions- which is to say, I paint for myself, for my love of color and form, but in a way that invites others to experience the world as I see it.

Ralph Levesque has been exhibiting since the 1960’s with a series of solo, two-person and group shows over the years. His work is included in private and corporate collections internationally. He has won awards and received grants and taught in private and public schools in CT for over 35 years. Ralph is a Connecticut native and an elected member of the Essex Art Association, Ridgefield Art Association, Guilford Art League, Lyme Art Association, Norwich Arts Council and Silvermine Art Guild. He has his studio in Redding, CT and is co-owner of Equilibrium Gallery. He has served as judge and lecturer for many shows in the Connecticut area. Artist Statement

I am a romantic visual poet, aware that all designs and symbols are inspired by the Natural. I am not concerned with producing copied images of nature but seek to find beauty beneath the material level. Instinctively and unconsciously I seek the essence of universal beauty-the intrinsic force of all.  Using materials both natural and manmade, old and new, discarded/found or recycled, I discover their hidden truth, the hidden reality of matter. It is always moving, evolving and becoming anew. My works are like artifacts from a distant past civilization and places unknown-pointing to new yet-to-be discovered worlds and realms. The element of time in past and future cycles of the universe are revealed, and appear in recognized yet forgotten memories.

Susan Lloyd

 

About

Growing up on Long Island Sound, Susan Lloyd has always been drawn to the water and the beach. She has always done some form of art and/or design with undergrad and graduate degrees in Sculpture and Jewelry and Metalsmithing, Graphic and Interior design. For the past 14 years, she has been making Shell Art; basically, gluing shells on things. This art form dates back to the Victorian era with souvenir boxes from Europe and sailors valentines from Barbados. Every year, Lloyd makes a Seashell Birdhouse for Project Return. Her work is exhibited at the annual Sanibel Shell Show: the oldest of its kind in the country and the Philadelphia and Cape Cod shell shows.

 

Artist Statement

The interplay of color, shape and texture are all important in the design of my work, as is the variety of shells used. Mirrors, boxes and paperweights had been my main focus but I am covering more unusual objects lately, trying to expand the medium.

Jane R Lubin

Jane Lubin is a mixed media artist whose work spans several genres. She works in acrylic painting, collage, digitally manipulated photographic collage, and polymer clay to make jewelry. As an eye surgeon by training, she has always had a fascination with anatomical shapes, and does not mind working at a microscopic level, and in small spaces!

Dr. Lubin has shown her work at the regional, national and international levels. She has participated in juried and solo shows in Connecticut, New York City, Boston, Chicago, Rhode Island, California and Michigan. As president of the Women’s Caucus for Art—Connecticut Chapter, she has curated area group shows, including a collaborative installation at the University of New Haven’s Seton Gallery, and shows at the Fairfield Arts Council and the University of Connecticut Art Gallery for the Women’s Caucus for Art. She has had a solo show at Westport Arts Center (2006), a solo show in the Director’s Gallery at Fairfield Arts Council (2009), and served as chairperson of the Westport Arts Center solo shows in 2009, as well as juror of the Westport Downtown Merchants Association Summer Arts Festival (2006, 2009).  She has works in the permanent collection of Norwalk Community College, and has had exhibitions of her altered books as well as her photocollages at that institution.

 

Artist Statement

My work addresses the oddities that I see in life, the surreal aspects of existence.  I love to assemble creatures composed of disparate parts, to play reality against imagination. Mostly, these images come spontaneously from the subconscious, much as the surrealists promoted “automatic drawing” and dream tableaus.  Scientists create new individuals, why shouldn’t artists be able to fashion new species in new worlds?  I use collage to rearrange my world, taking me into an alternate universe where there is no hierarchy; all creatures are equal and acceptable.
